Ordnance stores were already getting low, and a more urgent unscheduled errand was about to confront Nagumo’s carriers. On 11 December, Wake Island, 1025 miles west of Midway, had been the scene of the first setback in Japan’s timetable of conquest. In their first attempt to capture the atoll, elements of Vice Adm Shigeyoshi Inoue’s South Seas Force had been repulsed by US Marine Corps defenders. Planning a renewed effort, Inoue now asked Combined Fleet for carrier support. On 15 December, Combined Fleet ordered Nagumo to assist in the capture of Wake.
Wake’s defenders were left to their fate. After sunrise, Yamaguchi’s carriers put a succession of five attack waves over Wake with no losses. Soryu provided the first strike from 0716 hrs to 0745 hrs, consisting of six Type 99s and six Zero-sens. Hiryu followed with six more dive-bombers and six Zero-sens from 0800 hrs to 0850 hrs, while other kanbaku flew anti-submarine patrols in surrounding waters. The last three strikes were flown by Type 97s. All resistance on the atoll ceased by 1400 hrs, and the last air strike was recovered by 1415 hrs.
